10 Things to Do in Timor-Leste

  1. Climb Mount Ramelau, which at 2.963 metres, is the highest peak in the country. It's not as tough as you think... a three-hour trek from the base... watch the sun rise over the clouds.
  2. Explore the deep: outstanding scuba diving, easily accessible snorkelling reefs and beautiful white sand beaches.
  3. Try Timor-Leste's famous organic Coffee at Gloria Jean's, Timor Plaza. Buy some to take home and visit coffee country up in the mountains.
  4. Cocktails at sunset with a stunning view over Dili from the Panorama Restaurant... so lovely, you'll want to stay for dinner.
  5. Visit the Museum of the Resistance and Chega! to learn about the Timor-Leste's struggle for independence.
  6. Buy traditional handicrafts: especially the beautiful hand-woven textiles called "tais". There's a full range available at Alola Esperansa, Timor Diak, Arte Cultura Timor-Leste, Diak Printing and Women's Woven Art, all at Timor Plaza.
  7. Take a motorcycle tour: one of the best ways to enjoy the sights and sounds of Timor-Leste's unspoilt landscapes. Timor Adventures will take you there and help you to learn about the local way of life and culture.
  8. Follow in the steps of the Australian troops in World War Two, as they fought side-by-side with the Timorese against the Japanese invading forces. Eco Discovery runs cross-country treks as well as Dili day tours and excursions to remote areas.
  9. Sample wonderful seafood: check out any of the beachside restaurants for the catch of the day, simply grilled on the barbecue or served with elegance, as you prefer.
  10. Kristu Rei: climb the steps through the stations of the cross to the statue of Jesus Christ that is Dili's most prominent landmark, and enjoy the view of the city across the harbour. You might even spot a migrating whale from there during the season (October/November).
